Mary Ellen White, a cherished sister, beloved friend, and accomplished financial analyst, passed away peacefully at the age of 94 after an extended battle with dementia. She was born in Etna, Ohio, where she grew up amidst the love of her family, including her two brothers, Richard and Bob. The memories of their simple and fulfilling childhood on Pike Street remain a treasured legacy; filled with outdoor adventures, shared laughter, and cherished moments that shaped their lives.
Mary Ellen had a distinguished career that spanned several cities, including Columbus, Cincinnati, and Dayton, where she ultimately retired from NCR. During her tenure, she served as an analyst in the tax fraud department, gaining recognition for her exceptional contributions in reclaiming significant sums for the company. She concluded her career as a secretary to a vice president, relishing in the opportunity to don elegant attire and embrace the professional accolades that accompanied her role.
In addition to her professional accomplishments, Mary Ellen pursued various hobbies that enriched her life. An adept watercolor painter and photographer, she garnered numerous awards for her artistic talents. Her love for travel opened avenues for exploration and creativity, inspiring her photography. In her later years, she immersed herself in this passion, utilizing a well-equipped darkroom to transform negatives into stunning images. Collaborative projects with friends resulted in meticulously assembled 35mm slide presentations, which she joyfully shared with audiences.
Among her many travel experiences, Cades Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park held a special place in her heart. Her adventures included journeys to Russia, China, Switzerland, Germany, and a remarkable climb to base camp at Mount Everest in Nepal, achieving the remarkable feat of reaching altitudes over 17,000 feet.
In her final years, Mary Ellen resided in a supportive apartment community, where family members, including her beloved sister-in-law and niece, visited frequently. They engaged in heartfelt discussions about their memories, travels, and reflections on life, providing comfort and companionship during her time in need. Significant were the visits from kindred spirits like high school friends Martha Lloyd Herriott and Roger Pickering, whose presence brought joy and reminiscence.
A recent discovery in her Bible revealed a typed page containing well-organized insights on life's struggles and corresponding scriptural guidance, crafted during her time at Asbury College in Wilmore, Kentucky. This testament to her faith in Jesus was a profound reminder of her deep beliefs, underscoring the values she held dear throughout her life.
In a touching moment just a week ago, when asked about her favorite hymn, Mary Ellen reflected and smiled as she shared, "Amazing Grace." A recording was played for her, and as she listened to Alan Jackson’s rendition, her appreciative comment, "that was really good," resonated deeply with those who loved her.
