HAYES, Robert “Pete”, age 91, of Kettering, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, July 30, 2025. Born April 1, 1934, to the late Robert and Thelma (Lyons) Hayes, Pete was one of eight siblings and a proud example of hard work, dedication, and love for family.
A U.S. Marine, Pete served his country with honor during the Korean War, a chapter of his life he carried with pride. After returning home, he spent his career as a master plumber and entrepreneur, known for his strong work ethic and reliability.
Pete had a lifelong passion for soccer and spent years coaching at the University of Dayton and Chaminade Julienne and proceeded to win CJ’s first state championship in 1982. In his free time, he could often be found on the golf course—his happy place and a source of joy and camaraderie.
He was a deeply generous and humble man with a quiet strength, known for putting others first and loving his family fiercely. Pete was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Carol Hayes, with whom he shared a lifetime of devotion.
Left to carry on his legacy are his children, Brian, Scott (Gigi), and Jason (Brandee) Hayes; grandchildren, Lexee (Hayes) Miller, Chloe Hayes, Allie Hayes, Fallon Hayes, Arrika Garcia, Asia Hayes, and Zack Hayes; and three great-grandchildren who brought him endless pride and joy.
Family will receive friends Wednesday, August 6 from 12:00pm–1:00pm at Routsong Funeral Home, 2100 E. Stroop Rd., Kettering. Pete will be laid to rest at Miami Valley Memory Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made in Pete’s name to Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave., Dayton, OH 45420.
His presence, wisdom, and love will be deeply missed but forever remembered by all who knew him.
