Ronald C. Read

August 1, 1942 — December 16, 2022

READ Sr., Ronald C., age 80, of Sugarcreek Township, passed away on Friday, December 16, 2022. Ron was born on August 1, 1942, to the late James and Emaline (Gniech) Read, in Grosse Point, MI. He grew up in Oak Park and Bloomfield Hills, MI, where he graduated from Bloomfield Hills High School in 1961. Ron earned his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Detroit, class of 1966. While interning at Ternstedt Division of GM he met the love of his life and future wife Maureen Moss, whom he later married in 1966 following his graduation. Ron was quickly hired by International Harvester, and the young couple moved to Ft. Wayne, IN, where they lived for 9 years and started their family. While working in the Chicago area, he earned his Masters in Business from Illinois Benedictine College and became a Certified Professional Engineer in the State of Wisconsin. In addition to his work, he was honored to serve as a member of the Jolliet Diocesan Board of Education. Ron’s career took many different paths with Navistar International (formerly IH) and its subsidiaries, including Springfield, OH, Conway, AR, Tulsa, OK, and West Point, MS. One of his proudest accomplishments in his career was his work on the first MRAP vehicle program. As a result of his efforts in this program, he was awarded a Commander’s Coin for Excellence in recognition of this work. After 48 years of service to Navistar, Ron retired once and for all (after 2 previous “retirements”) and returned to the Dayton area to be closer to a majority of his beloved family. Even after retirement, Ron kept busy volunteering for St. Vincent DePaul through his parish, St. Helen, woodworking with his son Ron Jr., and chauffeuring his grandchildren to school and extracurricular activities. He was always happiest when spending time with his family, especially their regular Sunday dinners.

Ron was preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Collin Reuber; and sister, Pamela Jolliffe.

He is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Maureen Read; children, Cheri (Tom) Skiles, Ron Jr. (Julia) Read, Patti (Eric) Reuber; Ret. LTCs Jim (Sarah) Read; grandchildren, 1LTs Katie (Lance) Erickson, Colleen Skiles, Stephen Reuber, Cadet Shannon Reuber, A1C Rachel Reuber, Emily Skiles, Maddie Skiles, Brady Read and Liam Read; and numerous extended family and friends.
