Dr. Sean R. Convery, age 70, passed away July 17, 2025 after a battle with cancer. He was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on June 24, 1955 to the late Robert and Bernadette Convery. Sean grew up in Steubenville, Ohio and graduated from Catholic Central High School before continuing his education at the University of Steubenville (now Franciscan University of Steubenville).
Following his college education, Sean began his long career in the medical field by attending Wright State University, earning his medical degree and completing his residency at St. Elizabeth Hospital, Dayton, Ohio. Upon completion of his family practice residency, he was in private practice with a well-established Dayton family physician for several years before joining the Good Samaritan Hospital Family Practice Residency as faculty and Associate Program Director.
He became board certified in Sports Medicine to become the founding Medical Director for the new Miami Valley Hospital Sports Medicine Center. In that role, he was also faculty in the MVH Family Practice Residency serving as a preceptor and developing a sports medicine curriculum and rotation for medical students and residents (Family Medicine, ER, and orthopedics). During this time, he also worked at MedWork doing occupational medicine and served as the Medical Director for Fidelity Health Care.
He was the long-time Team Physician for Kettering Fairmont providing sideline coverage, training room hours, sports physicals, and supervision of the Athletic Trainers. Further, he was also the Consulting Physician for Kettering City Schools.
He later pivoted to become the Head Team Physician for Centerville High School. During all of this, he assumed the role of Head Team Physician for University of Dayton Athletics and coordinated all aspects of sports medicine for UD. He also supervised and developed policy for the Assistant Team Physicians, the Orthopedic Consultants, the Athletic Trainers, as well as ensuring medical coverage as appropriate for games, events, training room, etc.
A landmark achievement for which he deserves incredible credit is the recognition that concussion care was not where it should be and that there was research indicating more conservative protocols were absolutely necessary. He convened a group of sports medicine physicians, neurologists, athletic trainers, and neuropsychologists to review the literature and develop a best practice approach. While not necessarily novel, no one was following the newer guidelines. He implemented those guidelines for MVH and others locally could utilize them. Dr. Convery said that we were going to do this, even though we may be standing alone, because it was the right thing to do for the athletes.
Sean also had a passion for golf, the Steelers, Notre Dame football, and the Dayton Flyers. His resolute spirit and love of life will be forever missed.
He is survived by his loving wife, Cheryl; daughters, Cara (Ralph Woolfolk IV) Convery Woolfolk; Natalie (Craig) Cashen, and Hannah (Brandon) Hiatt; grandchildren, Landon Hiatt and Mylah Cashen. Siblings, Kathleen (Jeff) Parrish; Rosemary (Robert/Deceased) Rollman, and Robert (Kendra) Convery; and numerous family and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30am on July 25, 2025 at Church of the Incarnation, 55 Williamsburg Lane, Centerville, OH 45459. Family will be available at 10:00am for personal condolences. Sean’s family would like to thank the staff at St. Leonard’s, Ohio’s Hospice of Dayton, and Doctors Mark Marinella, Trevor Bluemel, and Ania Pollack for their care and support.
