My mom, Susan Jane Sine of Dayton, OH, passed away on Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at the age of 84. She was born on April 3, 1941, to the late Homer and Jane Sine in Dayton, OH. My mom was a woman ahead of her time who loved life and family. Some of the many things she loved were dancing, theater (especially Les Miserable), plants and gardening, animals, watching football, and anything sweet and kind. She followed her love of plants and flowers and opened Skylight Plants and Gifts in the Town and Country shopping center.
She met her life-long, best friend, Jackie Chandani, at Stivers High School in Dayton, Ohio. I have reason to believe both ladies were party girls (for their day). My mom was romanced by Blue Angels pilots, doctors, lawyers, and a few international businessmen. Eventually, I came along and the fun-loving, independent woman became my doting mom. She fashioned her life around me and always put my needs far above her own. For a time (longer than I might care to admit) she was not only my best friend, she was my only friend. No matter what hardship she had to endure, her face always lit up when she saw me or a loved one. She was intensely proud of her granddaughter, Mimi, and her grandson, Jack, who miss her very much.
My son, Jack, fondly recalls that when grandma took care of him and his sister, the world revolved around them and their happiness. My daughter Mimi explains, “My grandma had an independent and playful spirit and a wonderful laugh. I have many memories of Jack and me dressing up in silly outfits with her, sharing laughs, feeding squirrels, and most of all, how she always seemed just as invested in our silly activities as we were.”
There is cliché that the daughter-in-law and the mother-in-law don’t get along. Nothing could be farther from the truth between Christy, my wife, and my mom. Christy was the daughter my mom never had and my mom was a friend, a confidante, and a shoulder to lean on for Christy.
Like everyone, my mom experienced triumphs and tragedies, but she always gave all of herself to me and her family. While I don’t believe I was always the most deserving of a mom like her, I hope to see her again one day and I will tell her, “Thank you for being my mom.”
She is preceded in death by her parents; and my dad, John (Jack) Harrison
Susan is survived by her son, Jack (Christy) Harrison; grandchildren, Mary “Mimi” and Jack Harrison; and other extended family and friends.
A private family memorial will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to SICSA in Susan’s memory.
