Sylvia Eileen Korosei

October 5, 1926 — June 2, 2016

KOROSEI, Sylvia Eileen (Hickman), age 89, of Kettering, passed away on June 2, 2016 at Hospice of Dayton. Sylvia was born on October 5, 1926, in Round Bottom, Monroe County, Ohio, the youngest child of Frank and Freda (Martin) Hickman. Sylvia was preceded in death by her parents; half-sisters Mildred (Schneider) Riggenbach and Gladys (Hickman) Eddy; brother Leslie Hickman; husband Joseph; and son Kenneth. She is survived by sons Thomas (Kim Dunn) of Anchorage, Alaska and Timothy (Julie) of Kettering, and daughters Victoria of Oakwood and Jacqueline of Kettering; daughter-in-law Marsha of Lakewood, Colorado; and grandchildren Callie, Logan, Austin, Emma, and Alys. Sylvia graduated from Laings High School in Monroe County, and later worked at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Fairborn, where she met her future husband, Joe. They settled in Kettering, where she became an active member of Christ United Methodist Church. She earned an associate's degree in mental health technology from Sinclair Community College, and worked as a geriatric case worker at Tri-County Mental Health Center in Troy. When Joe retired, they moved to St. Matthews, South Carolina, to enjoy golfing and warm weather. Sylvia earned a second associate's degree in computer applications from Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, and worked in the OCTC accounting office. She returned to Kettering in 2009 to be near family, and again became active in church activities at Christ UMC, notably the Kettering Backpack Program and the United Methodist Women, as well as the Spirit Seekers study group. She loved gardening, reading and puzzles, and volunteered as a tutor at Oakview Elementary. Sylvia took great satisfaction in being of service to others. She has been sustained by her dear friend Rose Bozard and others in South Carolina, by her neighbors and church friends in Kettering, and by her abiding faith. The funeral service will be held Monday, June 6 at 1 p.m. at Christ United Methodist Church, 3440 Shroyer Road, Kettering, with Rev. Kitty Kincaid officiating. Visitation is from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the church. Burial will follow at Glen Haven Memorial Gardens in New Carlisle.
