William Richard "Dick" Teeters was born on November 6, 1945, to Robert Douglas and Opal Faye Newman Teeters, the fifth of six children. His siblings include, Rodney Lee Teeters, Henry Duane Teeters, Robert (Bobby) Douglas Teeters, Mary Ellen Teeters, and Beverly Joanne Bell. The world became a little brighter with his arrival.
As a boy, Richard was adventurous, mischievous, and full of life. When his younger sister was born in 1951, he famously told their parents to take her back because she was ugly and didn’t have much hair. Despite that less-than-warm welcome, their sibling bond blossomed into a lifelong friendship filled with love, laughter, and plenty of orneriness. He taught her to smoke a cigar and nicknamed her “Machine Gun Kelly,” a title she proudly accepted long before understanding that he was mostly trying to keep her from tattling on him for smoking.
At just 17 years old, Richard enlisted in the United States Navy. During his service, he traveled the world and experienced places most people only dream of seeing. His sister wrote to him almost every day and proudly attended his boot camp graduation in Chicago. He faithfully answered her letters, always signing off with his trademark phrase: "See you soon! Hah!" After his military service, Richard came home to McDermott, Ohio and went to work selling insurance for Western & Southern. Later, he finished his education at Palmer College of Chiropractic, eventually returning to Ohio to build his life and career in Dayton. His education, determination, and work ethic made his family proud.
Richard married Linda, high childhood sweetheart. When Linda was seven months pregnant, doctors discovered a malignancy that resulted in the amputation of her leg. Through it all, they persevered, and their daughter Valerie was born healthy. He also went on to have two more healthy baby boys, Craig and Jesse, with his second wife, Ruth. His three children were the light of his life, and he did everything he could so they knew that. He also taught his children to be just mischievous as him!
Throughout his life, Richard continued to demonstrate extraordinary courage and resilience. He weathered difficult circumstances, including the loss of his beloved spouse to cancer, yet he faced life's challenges with a strength that inspired those around him. Richard loved to travel and continued exploring beautiful places throughout his life. Whether through his military service, education, career, family, or adventures, he embraced life fully.
Anyone who knew Richard likely heard his favorite response when asked how he was doing: "I'm living the dream..." And those who loved him believe he truly was.
Just as important as his family was to him, he also cared deeply for his Chiropractic patients. They were the people he saw most and he truly cared about their health and wellness. Even when he couldn’t work anymore, he asked about them every day.
He leaves behind a loving wife, Lily Yuan Teeters, who cared for him deeply. He also leaves behind a daughter, Valerie, and two sons, Craig and Jesse, and his stepdaughters include Kelly Mockabee Mappes and Jue Liu Flanagan (Robert). His children went on to have grandchildren, Cayla, Gillian, William, Lexi, Sawyer, Joey, Stella, and Mei, who also loved him dearly. Richard left us with countless memories that will continue to bring smiles for years to come.
Rest in peace, Dickie Boy. We love you fiercely, and there ain't nothing you can do about it.
